Ingredients for Chopped Italian Sandwich

Ingredients needed for a chopped deli sandwich.
  • Vegetables. Chopped lettuce, red onion, and red bell pepper give this sandwich color and crunch. If you like other veggies on your sandwiches, like tomatoes or olives, you could add those as well.
  • Meat and cheese. We’ve picked sliced turkey and provolone for a classic taste, but feel free to substitute your favorite deli meat and cheese. Or mix it up and use turkey with ham or cheddar and provolone.
  • Jarred veggies. Drained banana peppers and pickles add a sour tang and another texture to the sandwich. Add some heat by using spicy pickles!
  • Sauces. Mayo and Italian dressing bring all the flavors together.
  • Seasonings. Adding Italian seasoning, black pepper, and salt to the mix add another layer of flavors. Don’t have Italian seasoning? Add basil, oregano, rosemary, marjoram, and thyme (or your favorite herbs).
  • Bread. Use a soft sub roll as the base for this sandwich. You can swap out and use wheat or a heartier bread as well.

Ingredient Substitutions and Variations

  • Italian Meats: Substitute turkey with chicken, salami or roast beef for a different protein option.
  • Provolone Cheese: Use mozzarella, cheddar, or Swiss cheese for a different flavor.
  • Italian Dressing: Replace with balsamic vinaigrette or a homemade olive oil and vinegar dressing.
  • Vegetables: Add or swap out veggies like spinach, arugula, roasted red peppers, or artichoke hearts.
  • Bread: Use whole wheat, ciabatta, or a gluten-free roll instead of a traditional Italian roll.
