Why You’ll Love This Easy BBQ Chicken In Oven

  • It’s so fast. Enjoy juicy BBQ smothered chicken in just 30 minutes.
  • It’s customizable. Swap the boneless chicken breast for bone-in chicken or chicken thighs, and use your favorite seasoning blend and bbq sauce.
  • It’s healthy. Chicken is loaded with protein and is naturally gluten-free. You can make this dish healthier by using a low-sugar or sugar-free barbecue sauce.

BBQ Chicken Ingredients

Ingredients needed for oven baked bbq chicken breast.
  • Chicken: use boneless, skinless chicken breasts. You can use other cuts but must adjust the cooking time accordingly.
  • Olive Oil: or use any light, neutral flavored oil.
  • Seasoning: combine smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and black pepper or your favorite seasoning blend.
  • BBQ sauce: choose your favorite brand of BBQ sauce. I love sweet baby rays.
  • Green Onions: to garnish.

How To Make Baked BBQ Chicken

  • Prepare the equipment. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a baking dish with oil and set aside.

Tips To Make Oven Baked Barbecue Chicken

  • Smoked paprika adds a smoky flavor to the chicken, but you can use regular paprika.
  • Add a little crushed red pepper or cayenne pepper to give this chicken a little heat.
  • Pat the chicken dry with paper towels and the seasoning will stick better.
  • To easily coat the chicken with the seasoning, pour the oil, herbs and spices into a gallon-sized zip-top bag along with the chicken. Seal and shake the bag to coat everything well.
  • Use store-bought BBQ sauce to make this recipe super easy.
  • If your chicken breasts are very large, slice them in half lengthwise or pound them with a meat mallet to shorten the cooking time.
  • Let the chicken breast rest for several minutes before slicing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when the chicken is cooked?

Chicken should always be cooked to a minimum of 165 degrees F when checked with a meat thermometer. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the breast. Thinner breasts will cook a little faster than thicker chicken breasts.

Do I need to marinate the chicken?

Marinating the chicken is not required; however, you can coat the chicken in the oil and seasoning blend, cover it tightly and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking. Prep this meal the night before and just pop it in the oven the following evening.

How do I store and reheat oven baked BBQ chicken breast?

Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat the chicken in the microwave or the oven until warmed through.

Can I freeze baked barbecue chicken recipe?

Yes! Cool the chicken and wrap tightly or place it in an airtight container. Freeze for up to 1 month and thaw overnight in the fridge. Glaze with more BBQ sauce before serving.

What to serve with Baked BBQ Chicken?

Barbecue chicken is a versatile recipe that can be served with your favorite sides. Try serving with Easy Homemade Mashed Potatoes, Potato Cobb Salad, Avocado Corn Salad and Sweet Hawaiian Bread Rolls.
