What You Need To Make Soft Boiled Eggs
The Ingredients
- Eggs: medium sized eggs, white or brown.
The Equipment
Saucepan with Lid
You’ll need a saucepan with a lid that is large enough to hold all the eggs you want to soft boil in a single layer
Large Slotted Spoon or Tongs
This is for adding the eggs into the hot water and then removing them. You can also use tongs instead if you don’t have a slotted spoon.
Bowl of Ice Water
You’ll also need a bowl of ice water to dunk your eggs in after removing them from heat to stop the cooking process.
How To Make Soft Boiled Eggs
- Fill the saucepan ¾ full of cold water and bring it to a boil. Once it has boiled, lower the heat and bring it down to a gentle rolling simmer.
- Using a large slotted spoon, gently add your eggs into the saucepan one by one.
- Simmer the eggs for 6 to 7 minutes.
- Once done, quickly remove the eggs from the water and dunk them into the ice water.
- Let the eggs cool for at least 2 minutes before peeling
How To Peel Soft Boiled Eggs
Method 1 – Peeling the Whole Egg
- Gently crack the egg, the bottom end usually has an air bubble, and carefully remove the shell. Peel it under running water if needed.
Method 2 – Peeling for Dipping Toast Soldiers
- Set the egg upright in an egg cup and using a knife or a spoon, gently tap around the top to remove it. Or use an egg cutter if you have one.
Tips To Make Eggs Easier to Peel
- Make sure your eggs aren’t straight from the fridge and that they’ve warmed up closer to room temperature.
- Older eggs peel easier than freshly purchased eggs.
- Add baking soda to the boiling water.
You can store soft boiled eggs in their shells for up to 3 days in the fridge. However, I suggest you try to consume them as soon as possible. Eggs peeled and cut through should be stored in the fridge and be discarded after 24 hours.
Typically a soft boiled egg takes 4-5 minutes after the water boils for a runny yolk. For a soft boiled egg for salads, you should aim for about 6-7 minutes so the egg yolk is not runny.
Yes they are completely safe just make sure the yolks are not extremely runny. Cook for 4-5 minutes at the least.
Fresh eggs are difficult to peel because the pH level of the white is more acidic which causes it to adhere to the shell membrane more tightly. There are two solutions for that. 1, use older eggs or 2. add a little baking soda to the cooking water to increase the pH level.
