What is Oat Milk

Oat milk is a plant-based milk made from whole oat grains. Oat milk has a creamy texture, oatmeal-like flavor, and is naturally gluten-free. But why make oat milk? If you’re looking for a dairy-free alternative to milk, oat milk is one of the thickest non-dairy alternatives.

However, the store-bought oat milk is quite expensive, more so than Almond Milk! Overtime, this really adds up to the monthly grocery bills so making it at home is a much more budget-friendly alternative! Plus it takes less than 5 minutes to make, from start to finish.

What are the Benefits of Homemade Oat Milk?

  • Almond milk is naturally lactose-free, gluten-free, and nut-free.
  • One serving of oat milk has 4 grams of protein.
  • One serving of oat milk has 2 grams fiber.

What You’ll Need

The ingredients

Rolled oats – not quick oats.

Filtered water – I prefer using filtered water when blending with the almonds. I find it makes the oat milk taste better.

Maple syrup – I like to sweeten mine with maple syrup but if you want to use a different sweetener, feel free to

Vanilla extract – I recommend that you use real vanilla extract and not the artificial one – a little drop goes a long way!

Salt – just a pinch.

How To Keep Oat Milk From Being Slimy

While some people soak their oats before blending, I find that soaking oats cause them to become slimy. Over blending your oats can cause oat milk to become slimy as well so be sure to blend for no more than 30 seconds. Lastly, straining the oat milk twice helps remove excess starch from the oat milk to prevent slimy oat milk.

How to Use Oat Milk

Other than drinking it, here are some ways to use up oat milk:

  • blended into smoothies
  • in a bowl of cereal
  • to make chia pudding
  • added to coffee or lattes
  • to make oatmeal/overnight oats

What Does it Mean if my Oat Milk has Separated?

Nothing! Just give it a good shake before you drink it to combine it back.

What Type of Oats Do I Use for Oat Milk?

Whole rolled oats is the only oats you should use to make oat milk. Quick oats and steel cut oats do not make for good oat milk!

How Long Does Homemade Oat Milk Last?

Oat milk should last 4 days in the fridge if stored correctly in an airtight container. After 4 days, give it a sniff. If it smells off, it’s gone bad.

How to Flavor Homemade Oat Milk

I add in maple syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to my oat milk, however you can add other sweeteners such as dates (into the blender) or raw honey. You could also blend in some fruit to sweeten the milk. You can also add spices such as a pinch of cinnamon or a pumpkin spice mix!

How To Make Oat Milk Creamier

To make creamier almond milk, you can adjust your oats to water ratio. The less water you add, the creamier the oat milk becomes.
