ingredients of protein cookie dough balls
  • Mini chocolate chips: the smaller chocolate chips make it easier to mix into the energy balls compared to regular-sized ones.
  • Oat flour: if you don’t have any, then here’s my guide to making your own oat flour.
  • Vanilla protein powder: I use the premiere whey protein but use what you prefer!
  • Creamy peanut butter: be sure to use creamy peanut butter so the balls are smooth and creamy!
  • Milk: use whatever milk you’d like.
  • Maple syrup: for some added sweetness.
  • Vanilla extract: just a splash. It’ll add flavor.
  • Salt: this is optional.
  • Gather the ingredients: Place all the ingredients into a large bowl.

  • If the mixture seems to be on the tough side and does not want to roll into a ball add more milk or maple syrup. Do it so 1 tablespoon at a time. Stir well and try rolling again.
  • If the mixture seems to be too soft that doesn’t want to hold a ball shape, add oat flour. Do so 1 tablespoon at a time. Stir well and try rolling again.
  • You can use an ice cream scoop or meatball scoop to help you scoop out even portions of the cookie dough balls.
  • You can add some hemp hearts, collagen, or chia seeds for some extra added nutrition.
  • Don’t have peanut butter? Try some almond butter or cashew butter.
  • Since we are not cooking or baking this, I highly recommend using a high quality vanilla extract over artificial vanilla extract as the flavors will really shine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to eat this cookie dough?

Since we don’t use raw eggs in this cookie dough, the cookie dough is safe to enjoy. Also, by toasting the flour in a 350F oven for 7 minutes, the heat will kill off harmful bacteria that the flour might contain. Just be sure to spread your flour out in an even layer when toasting the flour in the oven.

Do I have to bake the flour?

Since we are using oat flour and not all-purpose flour, this is safe to eat without cooking.

Is this vegan-friendly?

These cookie dough energy balls can be made vegan. Just make sure the protein powder you use is a vegan-friendly version as whey protein is not naturally vegan. Also, double-check that your chocolate chips are vegan-friendly. And that’s it!

How do I store cookie dough protein balls?

When you’ve finished making the protein balls, place them into an airtight container in the fridge and use them within 5 days.

Can I freeze cookie dough?

These cookie dough protein bites are so easy to freeze! You can freeze them for up to a month. Freeze the balls in a single layer on a sheet pan before transferring them to a freezer-safe container or bag so they don’t stick together. Thaw the balls in the refrigerator overnight.

Can I keep them at room temperature?

I highly suggest you store these protein balls in the fridge. While they can be kept at room temperature for a while, they keep their shape best when stored in the fridge.
