  • Quick oats or regular rolled oats
  • Salt — I like sea salt for this.
  • Creamy natural peanut butter 
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Chia seeds — you can use white or black chia seeds.
  • Maple syrup — or sweetener of your choice.
  • Vanilla extract — ideally, you should use real vanilla extract and not artificial extract.

How To Make No Bake Energy Balls

  • Combine the ingredients: place all the ingredients into a large bowl and mix until well combined.

  • Roll into balls: Take tablespoon-sized pieces of dough and with the help of your palms tightly roll even balls. You can also use an ice cream scoop to help you have even portions.

  • Chill in the fridge: Place rolled balls onto a sheet lined with parchment paper and chill for 30 minutes. Once chilled place the balls into an airtight container and store them in a fridge.

Tips and Notes

  • Make these a little fancier by checking out my post on How to Melt Chocolate and drizzle some overtop of the energy balls.
  • If the mixture doesn’t want to stick together and roll into a ball, you can add a little more maple syrup, stir well and try rolling again. Alternatively, you can refrigerate the mixture for a couple of minutes to help them firm up a bit before rolling.
  • Maple syrup can be swapped with honey or agave. 
  • Don’t want to roll them? You can press the mixture into a square pan and once they’ve chilled, cut them into squares to make them into no-bake energy bars.
  • Any creamy nut butter (such as cashew butter or almond butter) will work in place of peanut butter if needed but the flavor will change to taste like the nut butter.
  • Use an ice cream scoop or cookie scoop to help portion out the energy balls.

What else can I add to these energy balls?

There are quite a few ingredients that you can add to the energy balls. Try adding in hemp hearts, flaxseed, dried fruit, other nuts, protein powder, and more! You can also swap the chocolate chips for different types of chips such as white chocolate, butterscotch, caramel, and more. Play around with whatever you have in your pantry.

Can I use steel-cut oats?

I highly suggest you stick with old-fashioned oats for this recipe. Steel-cut oats would change the texture as steel-cut oats are whole oat groats chopped up, making them more crunchy. 

How do I store this?

These no-bake energy balls can stay fresh for 5 days when stored correctly. Once the energy balls have been chilled, they should be transferred to an airtight container or Ziploc bag and refrigerated. 

Can I freeze no-bake energy balls?

Yes! These easy energy balls are freezer-friendly! You can freeze them for up to a month. Freeze the balls in a single layer on a sheet pan before transferring them to a freezer-safe container or bag so they don’t stick together. They last for a month in the freezer.

Servings: 25 1-inch balls

Ingredients 

  • 3 cups quick oats or regular rolled oats
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup creamy natural peanut butter
  • cup mini chocolate chips
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • ¾ cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract, optional

Instructions 

  • Let’s start by measuring and prepping all the ingredients needed.
  • Once you have everything on hand place all the ingredients into a large bowl.
  • Using a spatula, or with your hands, mix everything until well combined.
  • Take a tablespoon-sized piece of dough and with the help of your palms tightly roll an even ball. You can also use an ice cream scoop to help you have even portions.
  • If the mixture doesn’t want to stick together and roll into a ball, you can add a little more honey or maple syrup, stir well and try rolling again.
