  • A versatile chicken recipe. This recipe is also extremely adaptable. Change the chicken to shrimp for a seafood stir-fry and add all kinds of your fave veggies.

Ingredients you’ll need

  • Chicken- Chicken tenders or boneless skinless chicken breasts work well in this recipe. Be sure to trim the fat off the chicken and cube into 1 inch pieces before cooking.
  • Broccoli- Use a crown of fresh broccoli for this recipe. That is roughly 3-3 1/2 cups of broccoli florets.
  • Spicy Teriyaki Sauce- This spicy teriyaki sauce is made with a traditional teriyaki sauce base (homemade or store-bought), chili flakes, fresh garlic cloves, vegetable or sesame oil, onion powder, and ginger (fresh or ground will work).

Recipe notes and tips

  • Prep your ingredients in advance as things will move quick when you start cooking.
  • Use a large skillet, pan or wok.
  • Cut your chicken into similar sizes, so they cook evenly. Same thing with the broccoli.
  • To adjust the heat simply increase or decrease the chili flakes.
  • I’ve used chicken tenders but you can also go for chicken breast, just make sure to trim any excess fat. You can also use chicken thighs.
  • Cook the chicken until it obtains a nice golden color.
  • You can use fry or freshly grated ginger. Ideally go for fresh ginger as it packs more flavor. Grate peeled ginger with a fine grater or zester.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds or sliced green onions.
  • You can also swap the chicken for shrimp – also delicious!

FAQ’s

What is teriyaki sauce made of?

Traditionally teriyaki sauce is made with a soy sauce base mixed with mirin, sugar, and ginger. For this recipe, I use a store bought bottle of teriyaki sauce, but you can easily make your own. Search for Teriyaki Sauce recipes on Pinterest, or you can check out some of the sauces I have saved to my Sauces and Seasonings Board on Pinterest.

If you are looking for a healthier teriyaki sauce look for the bottles with reduced sugar or no soy.

What to serve with this Spicy Teriyaki Chicken recipe

Whether you plan to eat this spicy chicken teriyaki dish for lunch or dinner, many different sides go well with it! Both white and brown rice make an excellent grain to go with this dish. If you want to add an additional veggie to the dish, try using cauliflower rice.

Another grain to pair with this spicy teriyaki chicken and broccoli is quinoa. You could also go all out and make a fried rice to serve with this dinner.

In terms of veggies, I’ve gone for a broccoli but you can of course add in other vegetables too. Veggies like sugar snap peas, mushrooms, carrots or zucchinis would be lovely too.

Variations to the recipe

Depending on your preference, you can make this recipe less spicy by decreasing the amount of red chili flakes you use in the sauce.

You can also swap the chicken out with shrimp for a Spicy Shrimp Teriyaki, just be sure to adjust your cook time as shrimp generally take less time to cook through than chicken.
