This recipe is also extremely adaptable. Change the chicken to shrimp for a seafood stir-fry. You can also increase or decrease the amount of chili flakes depending upon your preference for heat in this dish.
WHAT IS TERIYAKI SAUCE MADE OF?
Traditionally teriyaki sauce is made with a soy sauce base mixed with mirin, sugar, and ginger. For this recipe, I use a store bought bottle of teriyaki sauce, but you can easily make your own. Search for Teriyaki Sauce recipes on Pinterest, or you can check out some of the sauces I have saved to my Sauces and Seasonings Board on Pinterest.
If you are looking for a healthier teriyaki sauce look for the bottles with reduced sugar or no soy.
WHAT IS A GOOD SIDE WITH CHICKEN TERIYAKI?
Whether you plan to eat this spicy chicken teriyaki dish for lunch or dinner, many different sides go well with it! Both white and brown rice make an excellent grain to go with this dish. If you want to add an additional veggie to the dish, try using cauliflower rice. Another grain to pair with this spicy teriyaki chicken and broccoli is quinoa. You could also go all out and make a fried rice to serve with this dinner.
HOW TO MAKE SPICY TERIYAKI CHICKEN WITH BROCCOLI
Chicken- Chicken tenders or boneless skinless chicken breasts work well in this recipe. Be sure to trim the fat off the chicken and cube into 1 inch pieces before cooking.
Broccoli- Use a crown of fresh broccoli for this recipe. That is roughly 3-3 1/2 cups of broccoli florets.
Spicy Teriyaki Sauce- This spicy teriyaki sauce is made with a traditional teriyaki sauce base (homemade or store-bought), chili flakes, fresh garlic cloves, vegetable or sesame oil, onion powder, and ginger (fresh or ground will work).
To begin, break or cut the broccoli crown into mini florets. Then, cube the chicken tenders into 1 inch pieces.
Heat a 12 inch skillet with 1 Tbsp of olive oil over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the chicken cubes to the skillet. Sprinkle the chicken with salt and allow them to cook for 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally to cook all sides of the chicken.
Meanwhile, in a small cup or bowl, mix together teriyaki sauce, chili flakes, garlic, oil (vegetable or sesame), onion powder, and ginger to make the spicy teriyaki sauce. Set aside until ready to use.
Once the chicken obtains a nice golden color and cooks through, add the spicy teriyaki sauce to the pan. Mix the sauce and chicken together and cook for another minute or so.
Add the broccoli to the skillet and mix together one more time. Cover the skillet and cook on low heat for 2-4 minutes or until the broccoli is tender.
Sprinkle the Spicy Teriyaki Chicken and Broccoli with sesame seeds and sliced green onion.
Depending on your preference, you can make this recipe less spicy by decreasing the amount of red chili flakes you use in the sauce.
You can also swap the chicken out with shrimp for a Spicy Shrimp Teriyaki, just be sure to adjust your cook time as shrimp generally take less time to cook through than chicken.
