What You’ll Need

ingredients of apple crumb cake.

The Crumb Toping:

  • Brown sugar— the perfect sugar to use for this recipe.
  • Cinnamon— the best part about the cakes flavor.
  • Salt
  • Butter — make sure to use unsalted, full fat butter. Must be cold
  • Flour— use all purpose

The Cake:

  • Flour— use all purpose or wheat flour
  • Sugar— use granulated cane sugar to sweeten the cake.
  • Baking powder — helps the cake rise so don’t skip it!
  • Salt
  • Butter— use unsalted butter. Butter adds flavor and moisture to the cake. Room temperature.
  • Eggs— Eggs add moisture and binds the cake together.
  • Vanilla extract— pure vanilla extract
  • Milk— use full fat
  • Apples — Use any variety of apples you enjoy. I like Granny Smith for this recipe. No need to peel your apples for this apple crumb cake but you are welcomed to do so
  • Ground cinnamon-to add flavor

  • Mix your wet ingredients: In a medium bowl combine the melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and milk.

  • Cool and enjoy: Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before slicing.

Tips for making this Cinnamon Apple Crumb Cake

  • Do not overmix the crumb topping. You want there to be some texture to the topping.
  • Cool cake completely before slicing
  • If you’d like to use a stand mixer to mix your ingredients for this apple crumb cake, be sure to not over mix your batter. Over mixing the batter will cause your cake to be tough and chewy.
  • If your crumb topping is browning too fast in the oven before your cake is done baking, you can cover the top with tin foil.

FAQs

What apples should I use?

It’s up to you! If you want your apple cake to taste more tart, you can try Granny Smith, Jonagold, Braeburn, and Pacific Rose apples. For a more sweet taste to your apple crumb cake, try Gala, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, and Fuji apples.

Can I make this cake ahead of time?

If you want to make this ahead of time, simply bake the entire apple crumb cake and allow it to cool. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for up to 2 days. This also means leftover apple cake can only last 2 days in the fridge. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Can I freeze this cake?

You can definitely freeze this apple streusel cake! After it’s been baked, allow the cake to cool. Wrap it up tightly with plastic wrap and then aluminum foil wrap and freeze the apple cake for up to 3 months. Bring the cake to room temperature before eating.

What can I serve this apple cake with?

You are welcomed to make caramel to drizzle over top, icing to drizzle, maple syrup or serve it up with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. This apple crumb cake goes well with everything! Don’t forget coffee or tea as well!

How do I know my Apple Crumb cake is done?

If you’re not sure if your cake is cooked through, poke a toothpick into the cake. If the toothpick comes out clean, it means the cake is done. If there’s sticky batter on it, then continue to bake your apple cake.
