What is Whipped Coffee?

Whipped Coffee is a South Korean drink, a.k.a. Dalgona Coffee, made from instant coffee, hot water, sugar and milk. This coffee has taken the internet by storm on TikTok, Instagram and all across social media channels after a TikTok user Hannah Cho posted the whipped coffee on her page and it went viral. Even though this coffee has been around for generations, it most likely gained it’s most popularity during the lock down around the world while Starbucks and many coffee shops were closed.

Why this recipe works

You can’t go wrong when making this recipe. Its 3 simple ingredients measured in equal parts. 1:1:1: ratio. The coffee is whipped until it obtains a super creamy and fluffy texture and then placed on top of an iced cup of milk. The whipped coffee can be enjoyed either hot or cold.

How to make Whipped Coffee

  • Whipped Coffee Ingredients

whipped coffee ingredients, sugar, instant coffee, hot water, milk

Measure equal parts of the ingredients. Sugar, instant coffee and hot water.

Place the ingredients in a deep medium sized bowl. It’s important to use a deep bowl because the coffee splashes a lot and you will also need the depth as the coffee will triple in size and obtain a thick and fluffy texture.

You can use an electric whisk or whisk by hand. I highly recommend using an electric whisk.

Using an electric whisk, whisk the mixture until it obtains a creamy, fluffy, airy texture. You will notice the color and texture changing as you whisk. This process will take about 4-5 minutes for best results. Depending on the amount you will make, it may be less or more time.

Once the whipped coffee is creamy and fluffy, fill a cup with your favorite milk along with some ice. I prefer whole milk instead of reduced fat milk or half and half cream or some almond milk. Fill 3/4 way through.

a cup of milk with ice

Add in some of the whipped coffee with a spoon. You can garnish with some instant coffee on the top as shown in the photo.

I love doing that to add a little touch to it. When ready to drink, mix the whipped coffee and milk with a spoon or a straw and enjoy!

Whipped Coffee Variations:

To make different kinds of lattes, you can play around with the ingredient that go with the milk.

  • Add some good quality cocoa powder when you whisk the coffee. Depending on the amount you make you may need anywhere from 1 tsp. to tablespoon of cocoa powder.
  • You can use cold flavored creamers with your milk such as hazelnut, vanilla, French vanilla, mocha, etc.
  • Drizzle some caramel or chocolate syrup in the cup before adding your milk and ice.
  • You can also freeze some coffee ice cubes and add into the milk if you need the coffee flavor to be stronger.
