Creamy Chicken Ingredients
- Chicken breasts: sliced lengthwise so they’re thin and cook faster.
- Seasoning: I season the creamy parmesan chicken with garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
- Olive oil: or your preferred oil of choice.
- Butter: use unsalted butter so you can easily control the amount of salt in the dish.
- All-purpose flour: to help make the sauce thick.
- Garlic: I recommend freshly minced.
- Chicken broth: use low sodium chicken broth when possible to avoid the dish from being overly salty.
- Heavy whipping cream: to make the sauce creamy and delicious.
- Parmesan cheese: use freshly grated parmesan whenever possible.
- Parsley: for garnish.
How To Make Creamy Garlic Parmesan Chicken
- Season the chicken: Season the chicken breasts halves with garlic powder, Italian seasonings, salt, and pepper.
- Cook the chicken: Heat a large skillet with oil on a medium flame, add the chicken breasts, and cook for 5-6 minutes until they turn golden. Transfer them to a plate and set them aside.
- Make the creamy garlic parmesan sauce: To the same skillet add the butter. Once the butter is melted add the minced garlic and sprinkle the flour. Cook for a minute. Add the chicken broth and allow it to simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add the cream: Stir in the whipping cream and let it cook until the sauce begins to slightly thicken.
- Add the cheese: Remove the skillet from the heat and sprinkle the parmesan cheese and stir until the cheese is completely melted. Check for seasonings.
- Add the chicken back: Transfer the chicken back to the skillet along with the juices from the chicken and cook for a couple of minutes.
- Garnish and serve: Once done, garnish the creamy chicken with parsley and parmesan cheese. Serve the chicken over a plate of mashed potatoes and greens on the side.
Tips to Make This Creamy Chicken Breast Recipe
- You can use half and half if you’d like to lighten up the sauce, but don’t boil on high heat so it doesn’t curdle.
- If you don’t want to cut the chicken lengthwise, you can pound the chicken breasts into even thickness and double up the quantity to make 4 pieces.
- Freshly shredded parmesan cheese is preferred. Pre-shredded cheeses have an anti-caking agent added that prevents them from melting as well.
- Butter is an integral part of this sauce, so choose high quality butter.
- Use freshly minced garlic. It brings out so much flavor compared to pre-minced garlic.
- Be careful not to overcook the chicken as it’ll become tough. Once the chicken has hit 165F, pull it off the heat so it doesn’t overcook.
Frequently Asked Questions
To store the leftovers, transfer them into an airtight container, and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave until warmed throughout.
You can! Store the chicken and sauce in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge when ready to eat and reheat in the microware or covered in the oven at low temperature until heated through.
You sure can! Chicken thighs make for a great substitute, just make sure to use boneless, skinless chicken thighs. Chicken tenderloins work as well.
Homemade Mashed Potatoes are my favorite as the potatoes can soak up the sauce! A side salad or veggies such as green beans, asparagus, broccoli, and roasted carrots are perfect as well.

I was looking for a creamy garlic chicken recipe but most of them were complicated and asked for a lot ingredients such as wine and mustard powder. I don’t mind complicated recipes but I had been up for 24 hours after working the night shift so I wanted something quick and simple. I found this recipe and made it. It was delicious and so full of flavor!! Probably just as good, if not better, than the more complicated recipes. Definitely keeping this recipe.
